Welcome to the website of Hall's Harbour Handcrafts, located close to the ruggedly beautiful Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, on Canada's East coast.

My quilt studio is in my 1820's heritage home, surrounded by trees and wild gardens.  Enjoy the peace and serenity which inspires my work.  Visit the nearby fishing village of Hall's Harbour where you can observe the action of the world's highest tides.  Visit artists' studios, hunt for antiques and sample seafood and lobster.  If you wish to stay a while, there are several bed and breakfasts in the village and lots of other things to do and see nearby.

If you cannot visit my studio in person, rest assured that my custom quilts are made in the traditional way - entirely by hand every step of the way.  They are made of the finest available 100% cotton materials in a smoke-free home, and are truly one-of-a-kind.

HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE ANNOUNCEMENT

I'm now switching from summer hours to a series of Holiday Season Open House events. If you wish to visit during the week, you will need to email me in advance so I can be expecting you - otherwise you may arrive to find I'm away that day.

Especially for holiday shoppers, I will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 10AM until 6PM.

I will be decorating for the holidays soon and will have spicy mulled cider and cookies for my visitors. I will be closing for the winter on Christmas Eve this year, and if you wish to visit during January, February and March, email in advance for weather and road conditions in my area, and to assure that I will be expecting you.

During my Open House promotion, many of my items will bear clearly marked special prices. I have a remarkable variety of gift items: from my signature one of a kind handmade quilts and handknit sweaters, classic Nova Scotian Folk Art by masters such as Leo Naugler and Donald Armstrong, exquisite vintage hand embroidered and lace trimmed bed and table linens, beautiful vintage Suttles and Seawinds clothing (no longer made since it is too labour-intensive to be profitable), vintage cross stitch and applique quilt kits by Tobin/Progress, Bucilla, Paragon and Doublestencil/Spartex, and antique and vintage quilt tops. The list goes on and on - I have been a fanatical collector for many years and it's now time to reduce my holdings.

This year, I am introducing gift certificates and invite you to name the denomination you wish to purchase. A nice idea would be for a group of friends or family to go together in defraying the cost of one of my wonderful and unique quilts for a very special friend or relative or to mark a special occasion. Choice, of course, is always up to the recipient and I ship all over the world.
In addition, I offer time-purchase. Half down at the time of order, plus pre-arranged monthly payments: final payment due before shipping. Shipment is made as soon as final payment is received. The item is wellpacked, insured and has a tracking number. I have many positive comments about workmanship and service that I will be happy to provide.

I am looking forward to welcoming you to my cosy studio where
the woodstove is burning brightly, seasonal music is softly playing and you can watch me making quilts the old fashioned way with hand piecing and handquilting while you sip mulled cider and munch on Christmas treats.

I hope to see you soon!

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to all who will be celebrating this weekend! The weather here in Nova Scotia is ideal right now - my favourite season I think! For all of you who are planning a little drive this weekend to enjoy the peak autumn colours, may I suggest a stop at my quilt studio?

I have a remarkable selection of fine vintage linens, unique handknits; classic Nova Scotian Folk Art by such masters as Leo Naugler, Jean Marc Poirier and Donald Armstrong; and some very collectible vintage Suttles and Seawinds handstitched fashionwear. Of course, my main orientation is one of a kind completely handstitched quilts made in all sizes.

I will be open from 10 until dark Saturday, Sunday and Monday and would love to welcome you!

Check back after Thanksgiving for details on my special Christmas Open House schedule starting soon - hot mulled cider and cookies, seasonal decorations and music, and many specially priced items!

I have been getting many requests lately for information on my vintage quilt kits: Paragon, Tobin/Progress, Bucilla and Doublestencil and have decided to inventory, price and describe these items on this blog so that interested shoppers can have this info at their fingertips. Here are several Paragon cross stitch kits for starters - will try to inventory at least three a week and mark as sold ALL items previously listed on the blog as well! That should keep me out of mischief!
SOLD!
Above is a king sized Paragon kit #01175, and a thread kit suitable and ample for working the design. This is one of the rarer kits.

Above is the Paragon Baltimore Brides kit in double bed size(90x103). I am working a single bed size of this pattern right now and the colours are impressive as it works up! There is no thread kit and in all my years of collecting I haven't seen one for sale, but suggestions for colour and quantity are provided in two colourways.
Price: $125 USD

Above is a spectacular Paragon kit called American Heritage - jacobean tree of life design. It has been started and comes complete with an ample supply of luscious coloured thread to finish. The coloured photo sheet is there, but somewhere the stitch chart went walkies but I'm sure since it is started there are enough clues to finish it correctly. Size: 82x97.
Price: $170 USD for the complete kit including thread.

Have a great weekend and get out and see the harvest and autumn colours - spectacular!!!

VINTAGE PARAGON QUILT KITS

This lovely 90x108 kit is my most recent acquisition. Dating to the American Bicentennial in 1976, the kit is based on a quilt held in the Smithsonian Institution collection. The American Bicentennial celebration began a resurgence in the popularity of quiltmaking that continues to this day, and saw many marvellous kits designed and marketed. I also have in my collection a "Tree of Life" applique kit by Tobin and in addition, many cross stitch Paragon quilt kits from the same vintage period. All kits are of 100% cotton and usually the thread kits for the cross stitch quilts are much more colourfast than todays threads.
If interested in purchasing anything in my inventory, please contact me at mailto:janet@novascotiaquilts.com.
