This Info just in: Thanks to Sharon Pinka and Merikay Waldvogel, quilt historians in the United States!! Sharon and I have remained in touch after she visited my studio here in Nova Scotia the summer before last! Thanks gals!

This lovely quilt made from a kit is “Scattered Morning Glories” made by Home Needlecraft Creations #7127 and was advertised in McCall’s Magazine during the 1940’s. This confirmed my thoughts on dating and on the fact that this was an early kit from one of the smaller players. It is sized at 78×97 so will fit a double bed or go sideways on a queen or king. It is more than likely unwashed and is in immaculate condition(there is one tiny stain on the backing, I have a picture of it and can send it to you…..).

PRICE: $650 USD + $35 shipping and insurance = $685

Today I’m announcing a departure from my usual inventory of vintage quilting kits, both applique and cross stitch. I’m certain there is a market for carefully curated kit quilts that are completely finished and in pristine or near pristine condition. This one shown below fills the bill on all those counts and as well, I believe it dates very early on in the manufacture of these kits.

Judging by the luscious strong solid pastels used to make up this kit, it likely dates to the 1930’s or early 1940’s. I have several colleagues among the Quilt Study and Quilt Dating groups, and one of these knowledgeable people is showing it to her contacts to gather some information for me.

As you can see, there is a lovely scalloped border completely around the outside of the quilt and the quilt measures 79×97. 100% cotton, of course, inside and out.

Until the quilt gets to me and I can do further research and examine it carefully I am hesitant to put a price on it, but I do want to give everyone a heads up as it will be first come, first served with this charmer.

The only blemish on the entire quilt, so I am told, is a small dark amber coloured stain on the back – perhaps the size of a pencil end. But until I have the quilt in my hands I hesitate to say there is no other blemish.

The quilt is still bearing the stamped on quilting guidelines and one tiny print indicator saying “seam” so we are sure that this is from a kit, and also that it has been neither used nor washed.

I will add further info as I get it…..Contact me – mailto:janet@novascotiaquilts.com for further discussion or to put a hold on it.

I was recently asked by the owner if I would consider offering this vintage yoyo quilt for sale. Although I don’t usually sell quilts on consignment, vintage yoyo’s in good condition are hard to find these days, so I was more than willing to give it a try.

Yoyo quilts can be found arranged completely randomly and also can be found arranged in patterns similar to some of the simpler, but beloved patterns, such as this 25 patch.

In my opinion, the patterned ones are more appealing, but the random ones are sweet too.

The fabrics used to make these yoyos appear to be drawn from prints popular during the 30’s and 40’s and are typical of what might be found in any thrifty homemaker’s scrap bag. The yellow is a lovely sunshine yellow setting off the slightly darker prints. This was a great take along sewing project – could be done listening to the radio in the evening, visiting on the front porch with friends or while waiting in the doctor’s office. Nothing much has changed, has it?

At 53 by 86 inches, this one is sized to fit the top of a double or queen sized mattress perfectly. It would be best displayed with a solid coloured cotton bedspread underneath which includes a full skirt. Perhaps in one of the lovely strong pastels so popular in the 30’s and 40’s – jade or nile green, bubblegum pink, lilac or sky blue are all possibilities.

This quilt is clean, crisp and in excellent condition. No tears or breaks, and no yoyo’s coming ungathered. It’s ready for display in your romantic or cottage style home!

To purchase, contact me mailto:janet@novascotiaquilts.com

PRICE $325 USD + $20 USD SHIPPING = $345 USD Personal Cheque

I had put the quilt aside, almost finished, in order to work on a couple of small commissions I need to get finished soon, but today I didn’t have enough light to work on these.

This lovely little kit was aquired some years ago and I had put it together over the winter and finished handquilting it and begun to bind it – so close, but not a finish until now. There is a regulation 4 inch hanging sleeve on back, with the piece of printed identifying fabric from the bottom of the panel attached – so its provenance goes with it.

It was a Paragon 1972 quilt kit containing a backing, batting and the quilt panel. It brought back nice memories of my daughter, who was a toddler at that time.

Anyway, it’s finished now and for sale. Price is $235 USD which includes shipping
