Bucilla Applique Quilt Kit #8525 – Colonial Bouquet

I’ve been mulling over the content of my upcoming January 2013 Nova Scotia Quilts Newletter and thinking of topics, new acquisitions (I have a few hot ones I won’t reveal here on the site until newsletter members have had first dibs on them!), and what sort of special offer I can make that will help you in the long, cold and financially tight months after the Holiday season.

I’m thinking at some point in those dreary winter months I should have a “Sale of the Year” with prices chopped  – wouldn’t that be nice?

Thing is, though that only newsletter subscribers are going to even know there is a special offer available.

Would you like to know? Last month I offered 15% off the first kit and 20% off the next ones of equal or lesser value. Pretty good – but I can do better – and I’m planning to! If you’d like to know what the code is for the special offer and which new acquisitions are up for grabs, just send me an email – janet@novascotiaquilts.com – and put “Sign me up” in the message and I’ll add you to the list. No obligation and I will never reveal your name or email to anyone else. You can unsubscribe at any time, too. Give it a try – get in on the sale of the year.

And don’t forget that right now shipping for all of North America is free, and that applies to everyone.

Below is the cover shot of an earlier Bucilla applique quilt kit # 8525 – probably dating to the early 1960’s, in double/queen size.

As you can see, one has been started, and the remaining stamped fabrics to complete this one have been lost. I do, however have a second kit, also in the lovely shades of rose, and this one is complete and unopened.

I’m offering several purchase options on this duo:

Prices: the pair as described $595USD + $40USD Postage.

the complete and unstarted kit $395USD + $30 shipping

the started and missing coloured fabric to complete -  $225USD + $30USD shipping - you will need to find matches

Above and below are shots of the stamped applique fabric, plus the binding and stems.

Remember to sign up for the newsletter and keep informed of the big members only sale coming up soon – janet@novascotiaquilts.com  to tell me you want to sign up!

Keep warm folks, and if you’re on the Atlantic seaboard watch out for the snowstorm coming. Now back to carrying wood in to the house!

Cheers – Janet!

TWO MORE VINTAGE QUILT KITS

I’m always amazed that I can still find vintage kits that I have never acquired before, even after collecting for all these years. I have two new ones to show you today, and hope you find them as exquisite as I have.

The first is an applique kit, put out by Bucilla (#3127)  in the period  around 1950-1960. This kit is called Mount Vernon, which was the name of George Washington’s private family estate in Virginia, and the lovely mansion which stood among outbuildings and gardens and plantings which made it a self-sufficient small community.

The design is a series of floral wreaths arranged in an oval and surrounded by the popular early 19th century design of swags and tassels – this design was popular in all forms of the decorative arts during the Federal Period of the new Republic. The classic colours of red and green are used against a clean white 100% cotton background and this will make up into a striking quilt that will become an heirloom piece to be passed down in your family.

This amazing quilt kit is still sealed in its original cellophane wrapper, and is sized at 84×100.

PRICE: $395USD + shipping $30USD = $425USD

SOLD! My April 2013 newsletter wasn’t in folks’ inboxes 5 minutes before this kit sold to a list member!

Be sure you sign up for my newsletters – monthly and always offering specials especially for members! janet@novascotiaquilts.com

                      ****************************************************

My second find today is the sweet, country-style cross stitch kit “Homestead” #1572 put out by Progress in 100% cotton – it is stitched in country colours and is from the decade 1960-1970 I believe. It comes complete with the lovely floss kit to complete it and the kit is to fit a king sized bed – 108 inches wide by 103 inches long. It is still sealed in the original package and in immaculate condition.

This will make a simply lovely project to work on during the long days of summer and then you’ll be able to do the quilting during the cooler winter days.

The centre of the quilt is made up of traditional sampler motifs of a floral basket, and a house with trees and posies and a fence. A lovely vining border of flowers completes the quilt.

Below are two scans showing you front and back of the still sealed package of floss supplied – lovely vintage colours. Floss is by DMC and Royal Mouline.

PRICE: Progress cross stitch kit Homestead #3127 and floss kit as well:

                size 108×103 $290USD + shipping $30USD = $320USD

Contact me: janet@novascotiaquilts.com to put a hold on either item or arrange for purchase.

And keep checking back – I’m about to list more recent acquisitions.

Bucilla Vintage Applique Quilt Kit #8525 Colonial Bouquet

Above is the picture on the front cover of this recently acquired pair of 90×103 double/queen vintage applique quilt kits by Bucilla #8525 Colonial Bouquet in the salmon pink colour choice. The first of this lovely pair is still in its original folds and is complete and unstarted. The second of the pair has been started by an expert hand, but unfortunately, the  pattern fabrics are no longer with the kit. It is possible to match the fabrics, but the double pink in the dark salmon may prove impossible to match exactly. I have lots of choices of repro 19th century double pinks to supply so maybe the second quilt will be a “scrappy” applique. Ask me.

Remember to click on the smaller pictures for enlargement in order to study detail. You have two choices for purchasing  – you can either choose to buy both kits together, either with or without some fabric matches chosen from my huge stash of period and repro fabrics, or you can choose either the unstarted

kit or the started one to purchase seperately.

As you can see, the unstarted kit has lovely fabrics and a large amount of binding and flower stems, both pre-made bias.

PRICE: the pair #8525 Colonial Bouquet, as described $595USD for both + $30USD  shipping = $625US

                                                        OR

                 #8525 unstarted and all complete $395USD +  $20USD shipping = $415USD

                                                      OR

               #8525 started and incomplete $225USD + $20USD shipping =  $245USD

Contact me – janet@novascotiaquilts.com to discuss purchase – get me to put a hold on this lovely item – it won’t last!

the fabrics included in the sealed package Bucilla Living Rose #3285

Above is a picture of the applique fabric for the Bucilla #3285 Living Rose kit. This kit is  seldom found in the secondary market these days – should you wish to see a picture of a completed quilt made from this kit, check out the picture on my previous post. I was fortunate to find this quilt from a kit and will be offering it as soon as I develop my inventory of completed quilts for sale.

Above is the picture on the front of the kit package – unfortunately it is in black and white so doesn’t do justice to the lovely fabrics and embroidery.

The best find in many years is this kit  shown below: Bucilla #8814 Pansy Garden in the very desirable rose colourway – a generous 90×103 double/queen size.

contents all present in Bucilla #8814 Oansy Garden in rose colourway

Pansies seem to be the longtime favourite of women who make quilts from kits and have been number one over the years from the early 1920’s right up to the moment.

At the same time I was negotiating for this kit, I saw a finished quilt made from this kit but in the purple/lavender colourway. I was unable to purchase that quilt as it was way over my price limit!! I guess you can’t win them all!
PRICE: $425USD + $20USD = $445USD

The kit below Bucilla #3329 Buds and Bows is another charmer.

Bucilla #3329 Rosebuds and Bows 90x103 - double/queen

This is a generously sized 90×103 double/queen with fancy quilting in the blank centre medallion and a big bouquet of pink and yellow roses in each corner. The drop has smaller bouquets with a lovely pink ribbon connecting them all.

PRICE: $375USD + $20USD shipping = $395USD

                                     *************************************************************************

This is Bucilla #3128 Dogwood. This is a rare kit and seldom comes on the market.

illustration of finished Dogwood #3128 from package front

The kit is composed of a trellis work of lovely two tone pink blossoms with green leaves and brown stems. The embroidery details suggested are very delicate and designed to enhance the effect.

The drop is to be quilted – a simple and understated treatment that gives all the drama to the top of the bed.

This kit has been started – in fact it’s close to half completed and by a sure and skilled hand. Your chance to pick up where the unknown  quiltmaker left off  some 50 years ago and complete a family treasure. The quilt will finish to an ample double bed size – 84×99.

Bucilla #3128 Dogwood - actual kit in my inventory - double

PRICE: #400USD + $20USD shipping = $420USD

Some vintage floral applique kits

Recently, I have had some enquiries regarding my inventory of vintage applique quilt kits. It is time anyway for an update, as my most recent acquisition, the very vintage Paragon Rose Wreath kit has arrived and I have had time to look it over.

PARAGON #01057 Rose Wreath Applique Kit  all cotton 80×100

As far as I can see, all the applique has been done by an expert hand and it is ready for the embroidered touches. There is ample vintage DMC embroidery floss and the previous owner has noted in her own hand the numbers, each with a sample and a note of what colour goes where. She signs it and leaves her phone number – a sweet touch. The cardboard box front is in the box, along with the top, the floss, a vintage pair of embroidery scissors, and of course the bias binding that will complete your quilt. The quilting lines are all there, waiting to guide  your handquilting stitches. There is some slight foxing, due to it having been stored in a cardboard box, but that should be ameliorated if not eliminated by a wash in a gentle oxygen based product after the quilting is done and the quilt is ready for use.

The quilt kit dates from the time before plastic was used to package everything – I would guess mid to late 40’s, so we’re talking very very early. I was very lucky to find this one!!

PRICE:  $400USD+$25USD shipping = $425USD

If purchased between now and Dec 31/10, shipping will be free within North America

PRICE: $275USD+$20USD postage and shipping = $295USD

If purchased between now and Dec31/10 shipping in North America will be free

BUCILLA: #3128 – Dogwood  Applique, all cotton size 84×1–

This is another lucky find – it is unopened, so in immaculate condition and the binding is enclosed. Judging by the furniture style in the photograph, I would guess the kit dates to the 1960’s

PRICE: $375USD+$20USD shipping=$395USD

If purchased between now and Dec 31/10 shipping to North American destinations will be free

A note about shipping – from Canada to any point in North America tends to be fairly expensive, so as a nod to getting the best value for your Christmas shopping dollars, I am waiving shipping to any point in North America right up until New Years Eve. So if you have asked Santa for one of my gift certificates (available in any denomination) you still have a chance to order after Christmas Day and still get that bonus!

In addition, any vintage quilt kit you purchase will be packed along with three free handmade sachets filled lovely fresh lavender – this is a $25 value in itself!
