QUILT SHOW AND SALE, Hall’s Harbour, NS, Sept 28 & 29, 2013
QUILTS AT THE HARBOUR is 15 THIS YEAR!!!
It hardly seems possible that what we started as an experiment so long ago has prospered and grown year by year to a two day show that has brought people from all over North America and from Europe too! Below are some pictures taken mainly at last year’s show, but one or two taken from previous years too. All profits from commission on sales, free will offerings and bake table go to this lovely small heritage church and last year we cleared just over a thousand dollars.
A photo of the lovely heritage church, dating from first settlement of the area – after a few years of worshipping in local homes, the church was built circa 1840
The Sunday School/Fellowship room was built on about 25 years ago, providing a meeting room and washroom facilities. We sell smaller quilted items, knitwear, baked goods and quilters’ gently used items here, and have seating for enjoying chat, light refreshments and a little rest. The sale is staffed by myself, a couple of fellow quilters from the community and several members of the church who run the bake table, serve refreshments and talk about the history of the church and cemetery, and families in the harbour and surrounding area. We are fortunate to have keen historians available during the show, as well as dedicated quiltmakers!
Another view of the Fellowship Room, me watching a customer trying on one of the sweaters for sale last year. Her husband provided several of the photos used in this post – thanks.
A still functioning and very ornate kerosene chandelier at the front of the church. Note too the beautifully handcrafted pews, painted and faux woodgrained with the original numbers. The beautiful wainscotting matches the pews and similar wainscotting is seen in some of the homes in the community that date to first settlement.
The church also preserves the collection box which was sent along the pews on a stick by one of the church officers. Note the original wide plank floors under the carpet runner. The windows are unadorned by stained glass.
An overview of the pews, covered in lovely quilts. The Minister, Mike is checking one of them out. A wonderful assortment, mainly one of a kind, and there were several antique quilts and many vintage quilts for sale too. Also quilts in all sizes from wallhanging, tabletopper, crib and youth bed quilts right up through twin, double/queen and king sized – something for everyone and at reasonable prices with 20% going to the church – a win/win situation.
Mark your calendar now and be sure to attend, and hopefully show some quilts or consign us some of your unused quilting gizmos and goodies. We’re waiting to welcome you and you’ll have a wonderful day out among friendly people in an area of fabulous natural scenery. Visit us!!

WHOLECLOTH QUILT KITS: queen/king sized
I’m back again as promised with my current listings of classic queen/king sized wholecloth quilt kits. These kits are all vintage, manufactured in the USA of high quality 100% cotton muslin and are very hard to source these days. Handquilting one of these museum quality quilts is always a pleasure and when finished you will have an heirloom you’ll be proud to pass down through your family.
Above is an illustration taken from the packaging of Benartex Feathered Pineapple which by Holice Turnbow, who designs lovely quilt kits based on museum pieces completed in the second and third quarters of the nineteenth century in North America. This kit is in stock in a natural shade and measures 88×106 and matching binding is included.
PRICE: $250USD + $25USD postage = $275USD
SOLD: JUNE 2013

Another design by Holice Turnbow, this time for Penn Prints which was another name under which Spartex Doublestencil traded; this kit is Hagerstown Feather, available in natural with matching binding. Size is stated as full/queen on the package which means that width is 90 inches while length would be at least 106 inches.
PRICE: $250USD + $25USD postage = $275USD
**********************************************************
Shown above is Doublestencil American Heritage Quilt Collection’s American Star – the illustration from the package reflects what I was saying in my last post about the difficulties in photographing these quilts. You’ll have to trust me on this one! The pattern is a lovely central medallion of a star surrounded by designs common in the nineteenth century and set off by a cross hatching and a surrounding border. Measuring 90×113 with matching binding supplied, the kit is in antique white.
PRICE: $250USD + $25 postage = $275USD SOLD!!
***************************************************
And my last listing is a matching set of pre-printed quilt top, binding and quilt backing by DoubleStencil – this beautiful, still unopened set is Queen Anne Star sized at 90×108 in natural colour. This is another of Holice Turnbow’s designs and is specially priced at the moment. All you have to add is thread, needle and batting.(I recommend Quilters Dream Request weight 100% cotton – it drapes beautifully)
PRICE: complete kit $295USD + $35USD postage = $330USD SOLD!!

BACKING: still sealed in package, manufactured by Spartex Doublestencil of the same fine 100% cotton muslin used in their pre printed quilt top kits, in antique tea dye. 92x 117.
PRICE: $75USD + $20USD postage = $95
************************************************
Contact me: janet@novascotiaquilts.com to place a hold on any of these kits – postage is always adjusted downward for multiple purchases. International money order or personal cheque in USD are both fine.

PROGRESS QUILT KIT #1354 – DOGWOOD MEDALLION
From time to time, I have one or the other of these pretty vintage Bucilla Applique quilt kits in stock.Above is Dogwood #3128, and pictured below is Dogwood Blossoms #1587. Both these kits, which are prized by collectors and date to the early 1970’s don’t stay in stock long.
I’m pretty sure I have one or possibly both of these vintage quilt kits in stock, and plan to do an inventory between Christmas and New Year, but will check sooner than that if you request it.
PRICE: $395USD + $30USD shipping = $425 for either of these lovely kits
*************************************************************
I was talking to a good customer of mine yesterday who is working on one of the Bucilla vintage kits because she loves and misses the dogwood flowers seen in her native Kentucky – so of course, I had to send her the pictures I have posted below!
I recently acquired this completed quilt top: this treasure is waiting to be handquilted and is marked for stunning and profuse quilting of feather garlands on a background grid and should be a striking addition to your home.
This Progress kit is called Dogwood Medallion and is #1354 and was put out in 1943, it will finish to 79×97 as all the Progress kits do. It was shown as “Apple Blossom” in the Herrschner’s catalogue.
I suspect because America had just entered the war after the attack on Pearl Harbour late in 1942, that production was soon cut short and this may be part of the reason why this lovely vintage kit is so scarce today. I have waited years for this one and don’t expect another to come my way!
PRICE: $450USD + $30USD shipping with tracking and insurance
Remember, until December 31 you will have free shipping within North America for all purchases.
In addition, any of you who received the December Nova Scotia Quilts Newsletter can use their special code for a significant reduction on any purchases.
Why not sign up for the newsletter now – send me an email – janet@novascotiaquilts.com – with “sign me up” as the title line and you’ll have access to special offers, and see new acquisitions before they appear on the website.

A little Christmas cheer in the way of our first real snowfall today – but now it’s raining and very sloppy. I’ll check with you all soon!

Welcoming My Sister Site: http://vintageandhandcraftedinnovascotia.wordpress.com
I’ve spent this morning digging through bags and bags of beautiful household linens and found large numbers of hand embroidered and handcrocheted lace edged tableclothes, napkins both matching and contrasting, doilies and tabletoppers, sheets, pillowcases and guest towels. In addition I’ve found hand crocheted lace pieces suitable for lingerie, shelf edging and embellishing plain pillow cases. I also pulled out my large collection of Maltese lace. The lace made in Malta for the tourist trade in the late 1800’s and early part of the 20th century is recognised as the most desirable of the bobbin lace, and although the making of this lace has resumed in Malta using fine cotton thread, the extremely fine linen and silk thread needed is no longer available and so the quality is no longer the same.

In addition to lots of vintage and antique textiles, I have extensive collections of pottery, porcelain and faience, children’s wear, quilting fabrics, patterns and needlework kits of all kinds and I am always happy to mail out to you most items I have in stock, other than very large or very heavy things. Check out http://vintageandhandcraftedinnovascotia.wordpress.com and return often as stock is continually being added to as some sells out.
Back to vintage quilt kits in the next post – I have lots of new ones to list! And don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter featuring newly acquired vintage kits and special offers for list members only. Send a message to janet@novascotiaquilts.com in order to sign up.
Have a great weekend! Janet
