Franklin Mint’s Thirteen Colonies Quilt Kit

Below is a picture of the Franklin Mint Thirteen Colonies album style quilt kit offered by them in 1984 – sized 86×102 this is an ample queen size and was designed by Chris Wolf Edmonds who was one of the foremost designers during this period of resurgence of interest in quiltmaking that followed the American Bicentennial.

I have been watching and waiting for over 10 years for an opportunity to acquire this rare and sought after quilt kit – but no luck; until just after Christmas when I found this ‘quilt kit in progress’ in the secondary market.

Still in the  sturdy original box (see picture below) this kit has 25 already completed blocks. All that needs to be done is to join the central blocks as shown, with the thin strips and then complete the side and top and bottom  appliques and sawtooth borders and prepare for quilting.

Of course, I’m suggesting hand quilting – the work done so far merits the extra effort of handquilting to make it into the heirloom it will become in your family.

Comes complete with a certificate of authenticity, and still packed in the original very sturdy box.

Here is a shot of some of the clearly identified packets of pre-cut pieces – all materials needed to complete the quilt are present.

And just in case you wish to add these great templates that were used in the making of the album blocks  to your pattern collection – here they are ready for you to try your hand at replicating the blocks already made!

This partially completed kit is being offered for a limited time after which i will move it to my personal collection and complete it to pass on within my own family – I don’t really expect to find another one.

PRICE: Franklin Mint 13 Colonies Quilt kit 86×102 partially completed   $375  Note” Shipping fee in Norh America

The Traditional Wholecloth Quilt – kits to create an heirloom

Recently I’ve had some inquiries about traditional wholecloth quilt kits, and at the same time I’ve been completing a new inventory of kits I currently have in stock.
It turns out I haven’t really promoted these lovely kits for several years now, and have quite a few in stock at the moment. Below I will feature two Benartex kit designs that I have in stock…

Benartex - Anchors Aweigh by Holice Turnbow 40x54, includes back and binding

Above is the lovely “Anchors Aweigh” crib or youth bed size wholecloth quilt kit by Holice Turnbow – this is such a versatile size for a quilt – it makes up fairly quickly, can be used in many settings and because it is an off-white or ecru fits well into many decorating schemes and is very easy to wash and keep fresh.

PRICE: Benartex “Anchors Aweigh” by Holice Turnbow 40×54 includes backing and binding for $115USD+$15shipping= $130USD

It’s my understanding that the Holice Turnbow designed kits by Benartex are still available, if somewhat scarce, but I’ve not found any indication that the Spartex/Doublestencil kits are still being made. Occasionally one will turn up in the secondary market. My next post – next week I hope will feature some of these kits.

The machinery to produce the very wide printed tops is now vintage if not antique and it has become increasingly difficult to find or make parts for this machinery as it wears out.

Benartex - wholecloth - feathered pineapple - available 86x106 and 40x40

Above is a picture taken from the front of the Benartex package, showing the “Feathered Pineapple” design – a classic 19th century design I currently have available in both a king/queen size at 86×106 and also in a baby size at 40×40 - the smaller size would make a luxurious tabletopper for afternoon tea and of course would look lovely over the back of a sofa, thrown over a cupboard door or as a wallhanging. Picture it enhancing a christening robe for a darling baby!

PRICE: Feathered Pineapple king/queen 86×106 $250USD+$20 shipping=$270USD

Feathered Pineapple baby size 40×40 comes with backing and binding                           $115USD+$15shipping=$130USD

Keep in mind that I’ll be happy to provide tips to help you succeed in making yourself a lovely heirloom quilt that is true to 19th century traditions, and can also source wide backing material and the Quilter’s Dream cotton batting to ensure your quilt drapes beautifully. Contact me: janet@novascotiaquilts.com to discuss shipping one of these scarce and lovely kits to you!

Enjoy this long weekend coming up – summer is passing all too soon! Next week I will feature more wholecloth quilt kits, this time by Spartex/Doublestencil!

Best regards ~ Janet

MY NEW BLOG – Quilting with Janet

I recently began a new blog and would like to make sure you have a look. It’s called “Quilting with Janet” and is a more personal diary in which I would like to receive comments and questions and attempt to answer them. You can find this log at http://www.quiltingwithjanet.blogspot.com/ if this doesn’t get you to the site, email and let me know and I will correct this post! I haven’t had my morning coffee yet so anything is possible!

The picture to the left is the label from a wonderful Doublestencil kit I acquired recently – queen sized. At the same time I also acquired a crib or wallhanging size of the same design. I am ready to complete either one for you using my applique and handquilting skills.

MY BEST QUILT YET!!

I just finished this top today and since it is a lovely early fall day I took it outside and photographed it. I will have to wait until I have quilted it and have it professionally photographed to show you the whole quilt, I am just not set up to display a quilt of this size here at my studio. However, it will finish to about 86×106 inches when done and will be heavily handquilted in very traditional quilting patterns. This quilt is without a doubt the best quilt I will ever do and the person who commissions its completion will have a one of a kind, original design that is informed by the tradition of the baltimore album quilt but goes well beyond that concept. Of course it is entirely hand-appliqued and will be hand quilted.
I am planning on submitting this quilt to our provincial government’s Art Purchase Programme providing the cut off dates are good, but am displaying it here in case there is someone out there who is thinking of buying it for their private collection. I did have interest in it expressed by a couple of visitors from British Columbia, so will give hem the opportunity of first refusal.
