The fabrics for applique are a great mix of subtle cotton percale solids combined with small scale floral prints, and as you can see by the picture of the finished quilt on the front of the package.

Progress #1553 Majestic is a rare take on the commoner “Tree of Life” kit, also made by Progress (#1492) - both are based on the Palampores or block printed bedspread sized panels exported by the Dutch East India Company and the British East India Company from the Coromandel Coast of India. These “indiennes” prints as they were called caught the fancy of late 17th century Europe due to both their novelty and the fact that they were extremely high quality cotton woven goods such as had never been seen in Europe or even imagined – they are seen today still as made in both The Netherlands by den Haan and Wagenmakers, and in Provence by Souileado and Les Olivades and many smaller firms.

I was researching the central chintz panels that are currently available yesterday, as I have a large box of “indiennes” samples from den Haan which is calling out for me to make a medallion quilt from it. Den Haan and Wagenmakers http://www.dutchquilts.net/EN_index_.html features a chintz panel, and Margo Kreuger of Reproduction Fabrics http://www.reproductionfabrics.com/ has recently launched a line of three different panels – exciting!!

This is a picture of the fabrics to complete the quilt and although the picture is not giving us the true colour, one can see that there is a lovely variety and that the kit will be striking when finished.

The sweet and nostalgic figure of Holly Hobbie was on so many items for children and adults both in the 1970s, and there has recently been a fresh interest in these items……..

This kit at 36×54 is crib or wall hanging size, or if you decide to put a border or two on it you can bring it up to a twin bed size or slightly smaller for a youth bed or cuddle quilt. I have a plentiful variety of the sweet small calicos that will enhance this little kit, as they date to the same time period – therefore they are vintage too.

Paragon produced this darling kit under licencse from American Greeting Card which held the copyright. The package is sealed so you know nothing is missing and the kit has been well protected – it appears there is backing material, polyester batt, embroidery thread for detailing and even a needle. I did one of these kits up a year or two ago and by putting in a lot of quilting, it made it look really grat. The kit is dated 1972 on the selvedge edge of the quilt top panel and to assure its authenticity I trimmed it off and appliqued it to the hanging sleeve.

PRICE: KIT ALONE $185USD + $20 USD shipping – if you want some vintage calico, we can discuss that.

Any of the online stores should be able to help out, but if you would rather, I can source the fabric from my local Quilt Shop for you at my cost to acquire it.

The bias binding will also need to be provided and should be a good match for one of the basic applique colours – what fun!!

The quilt is finished using the marked scalloped edge guidelines which are clearly visible, as are the quilting lines. This quilt top is remarkably clean but has one or two barely noticeable age spots and should be soaked to freshen and remove the guideline markings.

As you can see the picture on the front of the envelope is crumbled from age, as is the bag from a store called Pomeroy’s which I presume is long out of business. I will enclose it in a transparent sleeve and support it with cardboard when I ship the kit.

And I predict it will sell this week, so if you want it please contact asap to put a hold on this.

This is the original version which was offered in suggested colourway of red and ecru, but having seen the kit for the version offerred as a premium for 16 Mule Team Borax, which was in red and royal blue, I’d suggest that colourway. This kit doesn’t come with the thread kit, so it’s your choice how you finish it and it will make a wonderful keepsake.
