FINDING THE VINTAGE QUILT KIT OF YOUR DREAMS
I am often called upon to help quiltmakers and collectors source specific vintage kits. Usually the request is quite detailed, with maker, title and call number of the kit. Today I’m posting this for Beryl, who is not at all used to using a computer and although she knows she saw what she wants online, she can’t tell me where – it may have been on my site – or elsewhere. So I’ve done a little legwork and come up with several possibilities. I’m hoping it’s one of these Beryl, because if it is, I am in a positiion to help you out!
I’m often able to do this, and usually haven’t discussed this customer service much online, but in the last year or so I’ve helped a customer find a replacement kit for an heirloom that was stolen in a burglary; and found baby quilt kits in the Beatrix Potter series for the proud grandma of twin boys and provided customers with instruction packages for some of the lovely vintage cross stitch kits on the market.
So if you have a request you think I can help with, don’t be shy – I’m often able to help!
Now to show Beryl and other interested quiltmakers – here’s what I’ve found.
*********************************************************************************
This is a lovely classic I am fortunate to have in stock, complete with the floss kit in two neutral shades, a medium beige and a darker beige, plus some gold blending filament to add sparkle.
This is Bucilla #3376 “Regency” in the double bed size – a lovely allover design that looks like a snowflake to me.
PRICE: $290USD + $25USD Shipping with insurance and tracking = $315USD contact me: janet@novascotiaquilts.com

The kit shown below I currently have in stock in your choice of either a double or a king size. I have no floss kit for this but can definitely supply you with sufficient vintage floss from my own stash to wrk the colour version shown; and am likely also to have enough floss to supply other personal colour choices – this kit would look lovely in many colour choices.
Paragon 01142 “Snowflower”
PRICE: double at $225USD and king at $250 – your choice: add $25USD for shipping – contact me: janet@novascotiaquilts.com to arrange purchase using personal cheque, international postal money order or Paypal invoice.

Beryl specified that her wished for quilt is cross stitch – just to be certain though, I am including this picture of an applique quilt even though I don’t think it’s the one she is looking for – this is a quilt that at one time was available in kit form put out by an unknown company. I have never seen the kit offered anywhere and was lucky to garner a colour picture and a quilting design for it and templates with a placement diagram, so if this one is your heart’s desire – you just might be able to get copies from me and make your own – I believe it came in blue and off white,. and am unsure whether there were other colour choices. Contact me for details if you wish to order copies from me.
I hope the quilts I’ve shown you today pique your interest. Does anyone have any suggestions for other snowflake quilts made from kits that I might follow up on? I need to find this lady’s dream quilt!

VINTAGE QUILT KITS: recent finds!
It’s time I alerted you to some of my interesting recent finds of vintage quilt kits. I think there’s something for everyone here!
My first find is an unusual one – this is the first time I’ve seen this kit and I was happy to be able to snap it up. It would appear to date from the late 1960’s.
This is Paragon’s “Virginia Reel” , an unusual combination of piecing and cross stitch in a double/queen size. This striking quilt kit comes complete with all fabric and the Peri Lusta floss kit to complete this lovely, traditional style quilt. Colours of red and green make this a natural for an antique styled bedroom but is also very appropriate as Christmas decor in any room in the house, thrown over a door, the back of a sofa or arranged over the back of a rocking chair it will add a warm, welcoming ambience to your Christmas celebrations.
PRICE: PARAGON VIRGINIA REEL double queen complete with floss $275USD + $30USD shipping, tracking and insurance = $305USD total
Contact me janet@novascotiaquilts.com to purchase this beauty

Above is Progress #1516 Tree of Life to be completed in cross stitch. Size 90×103 so will fit a queen sized bed. I have one of these in my personal collection and the colours are striking when completed. Very similar to Progress’ Applique version of Tree of Life, #1492 which is also currently in my inventory. No floss kit with this one, but matching colours won’t be a problem.
PRICE: PROGRESS #1516 TREE OF LIFE cross stitch quilt kit, 90×103 $190USD + $25USD shipping, tracking and insurance = $220USD total contact janet@novascotiaqults.com to purchase
********************************************************
And the very desirable and very early Bucilla #1886, Morning Glories, sized at 90×103, shown above, is on it’s way to me at the moment. I will be able to get better pictures when it arrives. It is lovely, with strong pastel colours popular during the depression era and early 1940’s – morning glories climbing a trellis and surrounded with traditional handquilting motifs. Thois is a rare kit, seldom offered or seen on the secondary market. The seller told me it has a small amount of water staining – these stains can be reduced to a barely noticeable shadow with use of Biz or other oxy washing products – my price is based on there being such a stain - this is often a fact of life with the much older kits, and when properlytreated after completion will not be an issue.
PRICE: BUCILLA #1886 “MORNING GLORIES” 90×103 $425USD + $25USD postage, tracking and insurance = $450USD contact janet@novascotiaquilts.com for purchase
***********************************************************************
The following kits are very rare and unusual quilt kits designed and sized specifically for infants and chidren. These kits vary in age from mid 1940’s to late 50’s or early 60’s and into the 70’s – vintage if not antique and reflect a sweeter and more sentimental treatment of babies and toddlers. These would all make a statement in a baby room with their retro styles and colours, and would also be at home on the floor as a play quilt, or even hung on the wall as a colourful focal point. What a sweet gift for a grandma to make for a precious grandchild.
****************************************************************************
Printed panels or ‘fooler’ fabrics are not a recent invention by any means and were seen in 19th century sample books and in scrap quilts of that time. Printed chintzes or palampores are even older, being among the first fine block printed cotton cloth brought back from India by the Dutch East India Company and the British East India Company in the late 16th century. Their novelty took Europe by storm and are still a staple of den Haan and Wagenmaker in Holland today. So this little kit, dating to 1944 and made by Hiawatha, which was a mail order needlework firm, takes it’s place in an historic tradition.
An idealized pair of happy, clean and well-fed toddlers off to bed and surrounded by fairy tale characters and sweet animals – so very sentimental and reassuring during a time of war and social change!
PRICE: PRINTED PANEL WITH INSTRUCTIONS for quilting $150USD + $5USD shipping, tracking and insurance = $155USD total email: janet@novascotiaquilts.com to order
*****************************************************
Next up – two different versions of the bedtime story – Goldilocks and the Three Bears – each one very much in keeping with the time period during which it was available: Contact me: janet@novascotiaquilts.com to purchase either of these sweet applique baby quilts.
Above is the Paragon Three Bears applique quilt kit – very 50’s retro style indeed, and including all the beloved scenes – who’s been sleeping in my bed, who’s been sitting in my chair and who’s been eating my porridge, plus the bear family out for a stroll. Bound to please with the brightly coloured appliques.
PRICE: $150USD + $20USD shipping, tracking and insurance = $170USD total
********************************************************************
Above is Progress Three Bears applique baby quilt – and again it is so reminiscent of the period in the early to mid 1970’s when small calico floral prints were all the rage – so much so that it was next to mpossible to find anything else! Three very colourful and happy bears out for their Sunday stroll in a country setting. What could be sweeter! Strong, bright colours will fade to softer shades as they are washed time and time again, or you can keep this one for display on a wall or over the side of the crib when baby is up. This one’s a real keeper!
PRICE: PROGRESS – THREE BEARS applique baby quilt kit $150USD + $20 shipping, tracking and insurance = $170USD total
*****************************************************
The treasure shown above was purchased at Marshall Fields – a legendary department store in Chicago and judging by it’s sticker price and the art work of both the “Gerber baby” and the Cinderella motifs it was available during the early to mid 40’s. It is 45×60 and the cross stitch motifs are stamped on fine percale in white – no floss comes with the kit,but requirements are listed so no problem to find matches.
The required pink bias binding for the scalloped edges is in the package. The art work of the cover deserves to be framed and hung in bab’s room too! This one is a true winner – almost a one of a kind find!!
PRICE: Bucilla #3283 cross stitch Cinderella 45×60 100% cotton w pink binding $165USD + $20USD shipping, insurance and tracking = $185USD total

NEW INVENTORY: BENARTEX WHOLECLOTH QUILT KITS
Good Morning to all my readers! It’s Sunday March 3 and here in notheastern North America finally starting to look a little springlike – for us that is! We still have lots of snow around, but the icicles on the eaves are dripping during the day, and it was nice not to hustle around starting the fire this morning. Since I heat primarily with wood, each day’s rhythm is measured by the steady bringing in of wood, stoking the stove and removing ashes and starting all over again. On really cold nights, the stove is stoked several times during the night as well – tiring for an old lady!
My shopping list this week will include some fresh maple syrup to pour over blueberry pancakes, and a potted blooming bulb to put in the middle of the kitchen table! I’m even thinking new curtains and maybe make a summer nightgown or two! I’m tired of flannel granny gowns!
But before I do any of those things, I want to post my recent acquisitions in order to round out my recent posts about making wholecloth quilts and my current inventory. A local friend has just purchased three of these beauties and I’m anxious to see which one she’ll start first!
The other day a big heavy box showed up at my local post office and in it were the Benartex wholecloth quilt kits I had recently purchased from a contact in the United States. My treasures are shown below!
_________________________________________________
Above is Benartex Garden Bouquet, designed by Holice Turnbow and available in queen size ( 90×108) in natural – This kit has been eluding me and I’m so pleased to be able to offer it.
PRICE: Garden Bouquet $250USD + $30USD shipping with insurance and tracking = $280
_______________________________________________________
I finally have this beauty back in stock again, in a crib size – in natural, it measures 40×54 – this makes a lovely quilt for a little girl and will serve her well in childhood, and then function as a wall hanging, tablecloth or snuggle quilt as she grows up – truly an heirloom when you make it with love! The 100% cotton kit comes complete with binding and backing – all you need is 100% cotton quilt batting and a spool of high quality 100% cotton quilting thread, like the YLI thread that I carry.
Price: Benartex Floral Fantasy by Holice Turnbow 40×54 in natural $150USD + $20USD shipping = $170USD total includes insurance and tracking.
_________________________________________________________
Above is the cover illustration for a quilt backing in natural, put out by Benartex to match their line of queen sized wholecloth quilt top kits. This backing is seldom found today and will complete your choice of Benartex queen tops beautifully.
PRICE: $80USD plus $30USD postage = $110USD includes insurance and tracking. Combined postage if ordering other items.

AND! BACK IN STOCK!!
Shown above is the very popular Holice Turnbow design by Benartex in crib size natural 40×54 – ‘Anchors Aweigh’ .
I have been able to find another so it is now back in stock! I’ve sold a lot of these over the years – they are popular as a classic quilt for baby boys or an accent in a nautical or beach themed room. This design never lasts long.
PRICE: $150USD and $20USD shipping = $170USD including insurance and tracking

VINTAGE QUILT KITS: NEW LISTINGS
It’s been said that patience is a virtue, and I’m feeling really virtuous lately, because after a long dry spell with few really new finds, I’ve had a couple of very good weeks, finding some very scarce, or some very old and scarce kits in great condition! I want to present several here for you today.
This darling kit shown above is becoming increasingly hard to source, and it seems I no sooner have one of the three different models in stock than it is snapped up. JCA, which specialized in baby quilts did several kits drawing on the classic Beatrix Potter illustrations so popular over the years. The kit which is 38×43 inches is stamped on a prequilted textile and comes complete will instructions and all necessary floss – this is simply darling.
Price: JCA Beatrix Potter Mama Bunny 38×43 complete and ready to finish: $125USD +$20USD for shipping = $145USD
If you are looking to complete a whole nursery decor, I have several patterns and kits for cross stitching birth samplers, growth charts and pictures. As well I have a selection of the darling children’s pottery dishware made by Royal Doulton and Royal Albert. Email me at: janet@novascotiaquilts.com for your needs.
***************************************************************************
I recently acquired this Paragon 01096 The Farmer in the Dell this child’s quilt is 40×60 inches and is printed for cross stitch on eggshell percale. Dating to 1943, this 70 year old kit is rarely seen. If necessary I can supply floss to complete this kit from my large stash, some of which is vintage.
Price: Farmer in the Dell, Paragon 01096 $160USD + $20USD shipping = $185, floss extra if needed.
Contact: janet@novascotiaquilts.com if you wish me to place a HOLD on this treasure
*********************************************************************
Above is the earliest version of Paragon’s #0111 “Tradition” measuring 90×113 inches. This early version was published in a box with a black and white picture on the front. Judging from the style of the instructions and from the reverse side showing Paragon Needlecraft kits displayed in room settings so typical of the late 30’s and 1940’s I suspect the kit dates from that period. Definitely it was before the adaptation of Zip Code on July 1, 1963 as the corporate office is listed as being in NY10, New York. The kit does not come with floss, but is meant to be done in one colour choice to suit your decor. Original box and printed instructions are of course included.
PRICE: Paragon #0111 90×113 Tradition $260USD +$20USD shipping = $280 USD
********************************************************************************
The complete original floss kit is very seldom seen for this lovely Paragon kit. This is the 1978 “Colonial America ” cross stitch kit in double bed size at 81×97 inches. There is some very minor age spotting which will likely soak out when the quilt is completed. This kit is opened, but not started in will come to you in a strng ziplock project bag. Below is a picture of the floss kit.
Price: Paragon “Colonial America” 81×97 includes floss kit $275USD + $20USD shipping = $295USD
***************************************************************************
And finally, a treasure I’ve been waiting for years to acquire. It is beautiful, and was well worth the wait! The top picture is of Progress’s The Apple Blossom #1438. The bottom picture is off the stamped applique pieces;. This kit was published also before Zip Codes came into effect and I suspect in the late 1940’s or erly 1950’s. Complete instructions come with the kit, but as is often the case, the binding is missing. This is easily remedied by matching your favourite colour among the applique pieces, and making your own bias binding for the scalloped edges of the quilt.
PRICE: $450USD + $20USD shipping = $470USD

Both of the quilt kits depicted here fit that description – Holly Hobbie never stays on the shelf long – although I have been fortunate in finding this one recently to replace the one I sold a while ago!
I haven’t been as lucky in replacing the Franklin Mint’s lovely 13 Colonies kit – it was published years ago in a very limited edition and seldom appears on the secondary market. Maybe I’ll see another one soon – fingers crossed! I did, after trying unsuccessfully to determine if Franklin Mint had templates and instruction manual and could/would supply requests for same, decide to keep files in my records in order to help out people who have the kit without instructions – contact me if you need them - janet@novascotiaquilts.com
