VINTAGE QUILT KITS: NEW LISTINGS

It’s been said that patience is a virtue, and I’m feeling really virtuous lately, because  after a long dry spell with few really new finds, I’ve had a couple of very good weeks, finding some very scarce, or some very old and scarce kits in great condition! I want to present several here for you today.

This darling kit shown above is becoming increasingly hard to source, and it seems I no sooner have one of the three different models in stock than it is snapped up. JCA, which  specialized in baby quilts did several kits drawing on the classic Beatrix Potter  illustrations so popular over the years. The kit which is 38×43 inches is stamped on a prequilted textile and comes complete will instructions and all necessary floss – this is simply darling.

Price: JCA Beatrix Potter Mama Bunny 38×43 complete and ready to finish: $125USD +$20USD for shipping = $145USD

If you are looking to complete a whole nursery decor, I have several patterns and kits for cross stitching birth samplers, growth charts and pictures. As well I have a selection of the darling children’s pottery dishware made by Royal Doulton and Royal Albert. Email me at: janet@novascotiaquilts.com for your needs.

I recently acquired this Paragon 01096 The Farmer in the Dell this child’s quilt is 40×60 inches and is printed for cross stitch on eggshell percale. Dating to 1943, this 70 year old kit is rarely seen. If necessary I can supply floss to complete this kit from my large stash, some of which is vintage.

 Price: Farmer in the Dell, Paragon 01096  $160USD + $20USD shipping = $185, floss extra if needed.

                                      *********************************************************************

Above is the earliest version of Paragon’s #0111 “Tradition” measuring 90×113 inches. This early version was published in a box with a black and white picture on the front. Judging from the style of the instructions and from the reverse side showing Paragon Needlecraft kits displayed in room settings so typical of the late 30’s and 1940’s I suspect the kit dates from that period. Definitely it was before the adaptation of Zip Code on July 1, 1963 as the corporate office is listed as being in NY10, New York. The kit does not come with floss, but is meant to be done in one colour choice to suit your decor. Original box and printed instructions are of course included.

PRICE: Paragon #0111 90×113 Tradition $260USD +$20USD shipping = $280 USD

                         ********************************************************************************

The complete original floss kit is very seldom seen for this lovely Paragon kit. This is the 1978 “Colonial America ” cross stitch kit in double bed size at 81×97 inches. There is some very minor age spotting which will likely soak out when the quilt is completed. This kit is opened, but not started in will come to you in a strng ziplock project bag. Below is a picture of the floss kit.

Price: Paragon “Colonial America”  81×97 includes floss kit $275USD + $20USD shipping = $295USD

                                  ***************************************************************************

And finally, a treasure I’ve been waiting for years to acquire. It is beautiful, and was well worth the wait! The top picture is of  Progress’s The Apple Blossom #1438. The bottom picture is off the stamped applique pieces;. This kit was published also before Zip Codes came into effect and I suspect in the late 1940’s or erly 1950’s. Complete instructions come with the kit, but as is often the case, the binding is missing. This is easily remedied by matching your favourite colour among the applique pieces, and making your own bias binding for the scalloped edges of the quilt.

PRICE: $450USD + $20USD shipping = $470USD

TWO MORE VINTAGE QUILT KITS

I’m always amazed that I can still find vintage kits that I have never acquired before, even after collecting for all these years. I have two new ones to show you today, and hope you find them as exquisite as I have.

The first is an applique kit, put out by Bucilla (#3127)  in the period  around 1950-1960. This kit is called Mount Vernon, which was the name of George Washington’s private family estate in Virginia, and the lovely mansion which stood among outbuildings and gardens and plantings which made it a self-sufficient small community.

The design is a series of floral wreaths arranged in an oval and surrounded by the popular early 19th century design of swags and tassels – this design was popular in all forms of the decorative arts during the Federal Period of the new Republic. The classic colours of red and green are used against a clean white 100% cotton background and this will make up into a striking quilt that will become an heirloom piece to be passed down in your family.

This amazing quilt kit is still sealed in its original cellophane wrapper, and is sized at 84×100.

PRICE: $395USD + shipping $30USD = $425USD

SOLD! My April 2013 newsletter wasn’t in folks’ inboxes 5 minutes before this kit sold to a list member!

                      ****************************************************

My second find today is the sweet, country-style cross stitch kit “Homestead” #1572 put out by Progress in 100% cotton – it is stitched in country colours and is from the decade 1960-1970 I believe. It comes complete with the lovely floss kit to complete it and the kit is to fit a king sized bed – 108 inches wide by 103 inches long. It is still sealed in the original package and in immaculate condition.

This will make a simply lovely project to work on during the long days of summer and then you’ll be able to do the quilting during the cooler winter days.

The centre of the quilt is made up of traditional sampler motifs of a floral basket, and a house with trees and posies and a fence. A lovely vining border of flowers completes the quilt.

Below are two scans showing you front and back of the still sealed package of floss supplied – lovely vintage colours. Floss is by DMC and Royal Mouline.

PRICE: Progress cross stitch kit Homestead #3127 and floss kit as well:

                size 108×103 $290USD + shipping $30USD = $320USD

And keep checking back – I’m about to list more recent acquisitions.

I want to highlight several recent finds – these kits had been out of stock and are getting harder to find, but I was finally succesful!

  This kit above, which has been started with excellent stitchery, is Paragon’s American Glory, #1147 sized at 82×97. There is still lots to be done, and this kit is always so striking!

               ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Below is another treasure. This is Paragon’s Americana  #01189 in king size 97×97. It has been started, but only just and is complete with the floss kit. This is the cross stitch version of the applique kit above. Another stunner!
PRICE: “Americana” cross stitch by Paragon #01189 $350USD floss included and until December 31/11 the $30 shipping charge is waived
And above is another kit that has been out of stock for a while. This is Bucilla #3376 Regency in the double bed size and comes with the hard to find floss kit. Both items are unopened and factory fresh from about 40 years ago.
News For Lovers of Vintage Quilt Kits!
First I’d like to wish everyone a happy Saint Patrick’s Day!!!
A Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to you!!
 And next my latest news. Over the last week, I’ve shipped a dozen lovely vintage quilt kits off to their new owners. Since the New Year, the number of kits shipped has reached 35. I want to thank all my customers, new and old for their confidence in me.
Needless to say I’ve been scrambling to acquire more treasures and have also done a careful inventory, pulling together my collection from various totes and trunks and am just about ready to show you my fresh offerings.
Bucilla Dogwood 3128 applique kit
 So today I am giving you a little preview of the listings I’ll be posting here over the next week or two.
I want to remind you that my kits are stored in a clean dustfree and pet free environment in plastic totes. Although I cannot guarantee that the sources I acquired these kits from were tobacco smoke free, I have an extremely sensitive sniffer and there’s no trace of smoke on any of them. I am a non-smoker, my house is a smoke free zone, and I no longer share my home with any pets. So that’s about as good as it can get!
quilt made from Living Rose bucilla 3285
 As unstarted quilt kits get harder to find, I have been considering acquiring some finished quilts that have been made from kits – above is a treasure that was made from Bucilla’s Living Rose 3285 Applique kit. It is 74×88 and I also have the kit itself – unstarted and measuring 84x 100. Pricing to come when the finished quilt and the kit are listed. If you want to discuss price or put a HOLD on any of these items shown today get in touch: janet@novascotiaquilts.com
bucilla pansy garden 8814 rose colourway
 The kit shown above – bucilla 8814 “Pansy Garden”  is a double size and I had given up the idea of ever having it in stock again. The kit came in two colour choices and this one is the rose coloured choice – striking!!!
Watch this spot as I begin to list my treasures and be sure to contact me to put a hold on anything you are interested in purchasing – these kits don’t last long!
Enjoy your day – and may the luck of the Irish be with you!!!
Hugs – Janet
More Vintage Cross Stitch Quilt Kits…..
Gradually I’m getting all my vintage quilt kits listed for sale. Time to reduce my collections!
Above is a single sized paragon cross stitch quilt kit based on a traditional applique pattern. There was a strong revival of interest in heritage quilts at about the time of the US Bicentennial in 1976, which also heralded a resurgence in quiltmaking that has not died down at all more than a quarter of a century later. This may be just the project you are looking for to dress up a spare room bed or give to a young girl. It’s small enough to be doable, but with a good choice of colours will make a strong statement in a traditionally furnished room.
PRICE: $135USD + shipping
Another lovely vintage cross stitch quilt top. This one is a large double/queen – definitely a queen and quite possibly a king. The colourway shown is the 1970’s popular choice of blue and green but perhaps it will suit you to use for traditional colours – since there is no thread with this kit, that will be your choice.
PRICE: $185USD + shipping
This is another double/queen by Bucilla for cross stitch. This vintage quilt kit is a classic design with lots of green to tie the bright songbird colours together. This will make a lovely statement against many styles of interior decoration. Very tempting!! This vintage cross stitch quilt kit probably dates to the late 70’s.
PRICE: $175 + shipping
Yet another classic, this time a vintage cross stitch quilt kit in king sized. I bought this in the late 1970’s from Mary Maxim’s in Paris Ontario and have had it stored away since then. Lovely colours make this a choice that will look good in most bedrooms and will provide a focal point.
PRICE $175 + shipping
And finally, a somewhat more recent but still vintage cross stitch kit, from the early 1980’s I think, and again by Bucilla. The colours suggested are lovely and although the pillow shams are not in this kit and I have not been able to find a pair to match, this is still a striking quilt kit. The price is certainly one that invites purchase of this hard to find kit. Again a queen/double size.
PRICE: $160 USD + shipping
