NEW INVENTORY: BENARTEX WHOLECLOTH QUILT KITS

Good Morning to all my readers! It’s Sunday March 3 and here in  notheastern North America finally starting to look a little springlike – for us that is! We still have lots of snow around, but the icicles on the eaves are dripping during the day, and it was nice not to hustle around starting the fire this morning. Since I heat primarily with wood, each day’s rhythm is measured by the steady bringing in of wood, stoking the stove and removing ashes and starting all over again. On really cold nights, the stove is stoked  several times during the night as well – tiring for an old lady!

My shopping list this week will include some fresh maple syrup to pour over blueberry pancakes, and a potted blooming bulb to put in the middle of the kitchen table! I’m even thinking new curtains and maybe make a summer nightgown or two! I’m tired of flannel granny gowns!

But before I do any of those things, I want to post my recent acquisitions in order to round out my recent posts about making wholecloth quilts and my current inventory. A local friend has just purchased three of these beauties and I’m anxious to see which one she’ll start first!

The other day a big heavy box showed up at my local post office and in it were the Benartex wholecloth quilt kits I had recently purchased from a contact in the United States. My treasures are shown below!

                                         _________________________________________________

Above is Benartex Garden Bouquet, designed by Holice Turnbow and available in queen size ( 90×108) in natural – This kit has been eluding me and I’m so pleased to be able to offer it.

                            _______________________________________________________

I finally have this beauty back in stock again, in a crib size – in natural, it measures 40×54 – this makes a lovely quilt for a little girl and will serve her well in childhood, and then function as a wall hanging, tablecloth or snuggle quilt as she grows up – truly an heirloom when you make it with love! The 100% cotton  kit comes complete with binding and backing – all you need is 100% cotton quilt batting and a spool of high quality 100% cotton quilting thread, like the YLI thread that I carry.

Price:  Benartex Floral Fantasy by Holice Turnbow  40×54 in natural  $150USD + $20USD  shipping = $170USD total includes insurance and tracking.

WHOLECLOTH QUILT KITS: wallhanging, crib and throw size

I’ve had several inquiries lately about wholecloth kits, and since I’m doing inventory at the moment I thought I might start posting my entire inventory – I’m checking and some items haven’t made it to a post yet. So here goes – I’m starting with the smaller kits – up to snuggle size 60×60.

First a few words about the quilt kits themselves – all of them were made in the USA before so much manufacturing went offshore. They have been made with the very finest of 100% cotton muslin and are for the most part based on the traditonal quilts found in museum collections and dating to the second and third quarter of the 19th century.

These quilts when finished may look delicate but they wear and wash well and look better with each passing year – I have made several to be used with babies, and know that the quilts are used on the floor, outside and all around the house and babies being babies they are washed frequently.

The next issue with these quilts is getting an adequate picture to show them to advantage – you need the light hitting the quilt at an oblique angle, as at sundown, but so often the pictures on packaging is dark and underexposed. It’s sufficient to say that very few pictures do these lovely quilts any justice at all.  Above is a small quilt I made for a customer and I think as a picture it’s as good as anything I’ve seen, but that is not saying much.

Now on to the vintage quilt kits:

Above is Benartex Feathered Star in the wallhanging version  40×40 in natural, complete with binding and backing.

PRICE: $150USD + $20USD postage = $170USD

                               ***************************************************************

Above is Medallion Star by Spartex’s American Heritage Collection, size 42×42 in antique tea dye – the wallhanging is what is on offer – comes complete with backing and binding.

PRICE: $150USD + $20USD postage = $170USD

                       ************************************************************************

Above is National Star by Penn Prints which was another line of Spartex/Doublestencil. I must apologize for the quality of the picture – the quilt top itself is beautiful in ecru and a lovely design – i’ve made this one and it’s lovely! Available in ecru, size approx 40×40 and back and binding in the package too.

PRICE $150USD + $20USD postage = $170USD

                                       *****************************************************************

Above is “Floral Bouquet”  sized at 40×48, this could be a baby quilt or a wall hanging. Part of the American Heritage Collection, it comes in natural. I can vouch for this one too since I’ve made it up – lovely!

PRICE: $150USD + $20USD postage = $170USD

                                   ************************************************************

Another beauty above – this is a very versatile design and size – carrying a nautical theme with anchors and rope  along with lots of crosshatching this kit measures 40×54 and is in ecru. Great for any  room in the house!

PRICE: $150USD + $20USD postage = $170USD   ON HOLD Jan 30/13

And finally – above is American Heritage The Rising Sun 60×60 lap or snuggle quilt kit in antique tea dye. This is an unusual size  and makes a wonderful buy as it is complete with backing and binding too – all you need to buy are the quilting thread and the batting.

PRICE: $250 USD + $25 USD postage = $275      MARCH 27/13  ON HOLD

SOME VINTAGE and CLASSIC WHOLECLOTH QUILT KITS

Doublestencil wholecloth quilt kit includes matching backing queen 90x103 in tea-dye

above kits  NOW SOLD!!

A few posts back I promised to list my full sized wholecloth quilt kits and got distracted by a large fresh shipment of vintage quilt kits. I’ve finished oohing and aahing over them and stashed them away after posting about several of them.

Today it’s time to return to my promise and list these lovely classic wholecloth quilt kits!
Wholecloth quilts have a long tradition in the quilt histories of several countries- Wales, northern England and late 18th century and early 19th century North America come to mind.
The kits I’ll offer you today follow closely those traditions, and especially that of North America. You can’t go wrong with these lovely kits – amply sized queens at 90 inches wide finished size and between 108 and 113 inches long. 100% ecru cotton, the one above even comes with a matching backing specifically made for it.
PRICE: Doublestencil Queen Anne Star and matching backing 90×108 $295USD + $35USD  – SOLD

Spartex wholecloth quilt kit - Hagerstown Feather queen in ecru

Above is Spatex Hagerstown Feather – a quilt kit derived from an antique quilt in a museum collection. Spartex quilt kits appear to be out of print – the firm, which was based in North Carolina is no longer in business, so the kits appear now and then in the secondary market only. This is a queen sized kit and is in an ecru shade.

Doublestencil wholecloth quilt kit - American Star queen 90x113 ecru

Above is another traditional wholecloth pattern – it’s by Doublestencil and is called American Star. Measuring 90×113 this is a more than ample kit in an antique off whiute and is based on a quilt in the Smithsonian Institution collection.

Benartex wholecloth quilt kit Welsh Beauty queen 90x108 ecruLast we have two Benartex wholecloth quilt kits, both of which were designed many years ago by Holice Turnbow - he was the foremost designer of wholecloth quilt patterns and based these two on traditional 19th century patterns. These kits are very hard to find these days .ABOVE: Welsh Beauty wholecloth quilt kit 90x108 in ecru $250USD + $25USD shipping = $275USDBELOW: Benartex wholecloth Feathered Pineapple 90x108 in ecru $250USD + $25USD shipping = $275USD Benartex wholecloth quilt kit - Feathered Pineapple - queen 90x108 ecru

Contact me: janet@novascotiaquilts.com to put a hold on one of these great items – or get further details.

Next post will feature some great vintage  Paragon applique quilts and after that I’ll list a collection of smaller wholecloth kits – exquisite as wallhangings, tablecloths or heirloom christening wraps!

The Traditional Wholecloth Quilt – kits to create an heirloom

Recently I’ve had some inquiries about traditional wholecloth quilt kits, and at the same time I’ve been completing a new inventory of kits I currently have in stock.
It turns out I haven’t really promoted these lovely kits for several years now, and have quite a few in stock at the moment. Below I will feature two Benartex kit designs that I have in stock…

Benartex - Anchors Aweigh by Holice Turnbow 40x54, includes back and binding

Above is the lovely “Anchors Aweigh” crib or youth bed size wholecloth quilt kit by Holice Turnbow – this is such a versatile size for a quilt – it makes up fairly quickly, can be used in many settings and because it is an off-white or ecru fits well into many decorating schemes and is very easy to wash and keep fresh.

*******************************************************
It’s my understanding that the Holice Turnbow designed kits by Benartex are still available, if somewhat scarce, but I’ve not found any indication that the Spartex/Doublestencil kits are still being made. Occasionally one will turn up in the secondary market. My next post – next week I hope will feature some of these kits.

The machinery to produce the very wide printed tops is now vintage if not antique and it has become increasingly difficult to find or make parts for this machinery as it wears out.

Benartex - wholecloth - feathered pineapple - available 86x106 and 40x40

Above is a picture taken from the front of the Benartex package, showing the “Feathered Pineapple” design – a classic 19th century design I currently have available in both a king/queen size at 86×106 and also in a baby size at 40×40 - the smaller size would make a luxurious tabletopper for afternoon tea and of course would look lovely over the back of a sofa, thrown over a cupboard door or as a wallhanging. Picture it enhancing a christening robe for a darling baby!

**************************************************

Keep in mind that I’ll be happy to provide tips to help you succeed in making yourself a lovely heirloom quilt that is true to 19th century traditions, and can also source wide backing material and the Quilter’s Dream cotton batting to ensure your quilt drapes beautifully. Contact me: janet@novascotiaquilts.com to discuss shipping one of these scarce and lovely kits to you!

Enjoy this long weekend coming up – summer is passing all too soon! Next week I will feature more wholecloth quilt kits, this time by Spartex/Doublestencil!

Best regards ~ Janet

UPDATE: MORE VINTAGE APPLIQUE QUILTS

Today I have acquired three remarkable vintage  Bucilla Applique  quilt kits. Two of them I had not seen before. The third I had only seen once before when I picked up a partial kit a few months ago that was mixed in with several other kits all in a jumble. These are from the same source, have been well and carefully stored and are clean and intact except for one small  exception.

I am waiting for them to ship and delivery should be in a week to 10 days, at which time I will confirm their apparent excellent condition before completing a sale. Contact me to reserve any of them and I will put a hold on them,

I’m really thrilled with these items and can hardly wait to see them!

The first kit is Bucilla Fascination #8602 size 90×103. This kit was featured in “Living for Young Homemakers” magazine. Below is a sample of the fine workmanship on the finished panel – the other panels have all the appliques pinned in place.

This beautiful kit comes complete with thread, embroidery floss and lavender bias binding.

PRICE: $275 USD + $25 USD SHIPPING for a total of $300 USD

Email me mailto:janet@novascotiaquilts.com to reserve this kit

Above is part of one of the blocks in Bucilla’s Colonial Chintz #8737  (90×103) which is based  on a Whig Rose design from the mid 1850’s. This vintage kit was featured in “Seventeen” magazine.

Two of the side panels are in progress, some pieces are pinned to the centre panels and the rest are all cut out and neatly sorted into envelopes. Complete with thread, embroidery floss, bias for flower stems  and bias binding to complete the quilt in yellow.

PRICE: $275 USD + $25 USD SHIPPING for a TOTAL of $300 USD

email  at mailto:janet@novascotiaquilts.com to reserve this lovely kit

The last vintage kit for today is Bucilla  Pansy Garden #8814 (90×103) which is a classic. Again, part of the kit has been completed and the work is exquisite. The rest of the applique pieces are pinned to the unworked panels and I must note a small number may be missing. I can ascertain how many are not in place and matching the solid colour pieces should not be too difficult. I can do this or the purchaser may wish to do it.

PRICE: $275 USD + $25 USD SHIPPING for a TOTAL of $300USD
THIS ITEM IS ON HOLD  Aug 21/10

Email mailto:janet@novascotiaquilts.com to reserve this vintage applique kit

That’s all for now, but check back as I have some lovely new cross stitch vintage quilt kits and some new doublestencil and Spartex wholecloth  kits to list later this weekend.
