Above is a real treasure! Already started and worked beautifully this is Bucilla Fascination #8602 in clean condition and will be a stunning quilt.
Above: Bucilla Garden Poppies 8791 double size in the desirable red colourway shown in the whole quilt shown on the bed. This one too is getting hard to source as it is a favourite among quilt collectors.

And finally, above – Bucilla Colonial Chintz #8737 size 80×103, this has been started and I’ve checked and it appears it’s all there. This is perhaps my favourite, and is based on the Whig Rose pattern which was very popular in the 1850’s. If you decide to buy this one, you won’t be disappointed, but do be careful – it’s full of pins where the pieces are pinned on and ready to go.
PRICE: $275 USD + shipping
SOLD Feb16/11
In addition I have a large choice of Spartex/Doublestencil wholecloth kits, a few of which are embellished with applique – these are fun projects and the completed quilt is always striking. These also are vintage kits which are no longer in production. Ask if you need more details and pictures.
Some vintage floral applique kits
Recently, I have had some enquiries regarding my inventory of vintage applique quilt kits. It is time anyway for an update, as my most recent acquisition, the very vintage Paragon Rose Wreath kit has arrived and I have had time to look it over.
PARAGON #01057 Rose Wreath Applique Kit all cotton 80×100
As far as I can see, all the applique has been done by an expert hand and it is ready for the embroidered touches. There is ample vintage DMC embroidery floss and the previous owner has noted in her own hand the numbers, each with a sample and a note of what colour goes where. She signs it and leaves her phone number – a sweet touch. The cardboard box front is in the box, along with the top, the floss, a vintage pair of embroidery scissors, and of course the bias binding that will complete your quilt. The quilting lines are all there, waiting to guide your handquilting stitches. There is some slight foxing, due to it having been stored in a cardboard box, but that should be ameliorated if not eliminated by a wash in a gentle oxygen based product after the quilting is done and the quilt is ready for use.
The quilt kit dates from the time before plastic was used to package everything – I would guess mid to late 40’s, so we’re talking very very early. I was very lucky to find this one!!
PRICE: $400USD+$25USD shipping = $425USD
If purchased between now and Dec 31/10, shipping will be free within North America

BUCILLA: #3128 – Dogwood Applique, all cotton size 84×1–

A note about shipping – from Canada to any point in North America tends to be fairly expensive, so as a nod to getting the best value for your Christmas shopping dollars, I am waiving shipping to any point in North America right up until New Years Eve. So if you have asked Santa for one of my gift certificates (available in any denomination) you still have a chance to order after Christmas Day and still get that bonus!
In addition, any vintage quilt kit you purchase will be packed along with three free handmade sachets filled lovely fresh lavender – this is a $25 value in itself!

If you see a kit you would like to purchase, email me mailto:janet@novascotiaquilts.com and I will reserve it for you and give you payment details.

A CHANGE IN PACE
Most of my life I have been a terrible packrat and collector and I have come to the realization that I need to start weeding out my collections – have made a New Year’s resolution to do that and it may be easier than the second one to get fitter and lose some weight. I need to concentrate specially my collections of vintage quilt kits, both cross stitched (Paragon and Tobin)and applique and Doublestencil Smithsonian whole cloth and wholecloths embellished with needleturn applique.
In addition I have a huge supply of fabrics, mostly 19th century reproduction, amish-style solids and 1930’s both repro and genuine feedsack. As well I have a fair supply of 1970’s and 80’s tiny flowered calicos. Time to get sewing on my own planned projects so I will only rarely now be accepting commissions to hand quilt others’ quilt tops and now and then will accept a quilt restoration if I am intrigued enough. I am hoping my new commission clients may be interested in letting me surprise them after choosing colours and type of quilt – my creative juices are currently becoming frustrated! I have many antique and vintage quilt tops to be finished too.
As well, I have collected and dealt in Nova Scotian Folk Art for at least 30 years and am planning on keeping only a few sentimental pieces such as the fine Elmer Killen carving of a man and team plowing, which was left to me in my mother’s estate.
I also have smalls of all sorts to go.
Basically I’d suggest you contact me with your wish list and we’ll see what we can find – once the snow is gone and the tourists are here again I will be open 7 days a week and expect my collections to move fast, so perhaps checking out my inventory now is a good idea!
I am reaching the point in life where I want to do more of my own design projects and am also embarking on teaching online as my main occupation, so it makes sense to downsize. As well I am looking at some fairly extensive maintainance for my almost 200 year old home so reducing the stuff that will need to be pushed around from place to place makes a lot of sense to me!!!.
DOUBLESTENCIL AMERICAN HERITAGE FLORAL APPLIQUE QUILT KIT
Another wonderful find!! I’ve been really lucky lately. This one is a rare queen sized kit, 88×114 in excellent condition. In addition I also have the kit for the wallhanging shown above the bed in the picture. The small quilt is 40×40 so it can also be used as a crib quilt.
Again, I would love to make up one or both of these kits for you – the quilts will be entirely hand appliqued and hand quilted – guaranteed to become a family treasure.
In addition to this blog on my quilt studio website, I blog at http://www.quiltingwithjanet.blogspot.com and will be posting a picture there this evening of my most recent completed commission – an art quilt inspired by a painting of geese by Canadian First Nations artist Benjamin Chee Chee.
