I want to highlight several recent finds – these kits had been out of stock and are getting harder to find, but I was finally succesful!

  This kit above, which has been started with excellent stitchery, is Paragon’s American Glory, #1147 sized at 82×97. There is still lots to be done, and this kit is always so striking!

Below is another treasure. This is Paragon’s Americana  #01189 in king size 97×97. It has been started, but only just and is complete with the floss kit. This is the cross stitch version of the applique kit above. Another stunner!

And above is another kit that has been out of stock for a while. This is Bucilla #3376 Regency in the double bed size and comes with the hard to find floss kit. Both items are unopened and factory fresh from about 40 years ago.

Now and then I find an exceptional vintage quilt kit, and I am so excited to have acquired this one. It is a Lee Wards by Dexter #08-90541 “Pansy” vintage applique kit measuring 81×100 inches.

The first two pictures are of the kit in its original package and the other two, below, are of the various colours of pre-printed fabric and pre-made binding awaiting your cutting out and appliquing.

The above picture is a little cloudy and I will take better pictures when this vintage kit gets here in a few days – watch for the added pictures!

Above is the picture on the front cover of this recently acquired pair of 90×103 double/queen vintage applique quilt kits by Bucilla #8525 Colonial Bouquet in the salmon pink colour choice. The first of this lovely pair is still in its original folds and is complete and unstarted. The second of the pair has been started by an expert hand, but unfortunately, the  pattern fabrics are no longer with the kit. It is possible to match the fabrics, but the double pink in the dark salmon may prove impossible to match exactly. I have lots of choices of repro 19th century double pinks to supply so maybe the second quilt will be a “scrappy” applique. Ask me.

Doublestencil wholecloth quilt kit includes matching backing queen 90x103 in tea-dye

A few posts back I promised to list my full sized wholecloth quilt kits and got distracted by a large fresh shipment of vintage quilt kits. I’ve finished oohing and aahing over them and stashed them away after posting about several of them.

Today it’s time to return to my promise and list these lovely classic wholecloth quilt kits!

Wholecloth quilts have a long tradition in the quilt histories of several countries- Wales, northern England and late 18th century and early 19th century North America come to mind.

The kits I’ll offer you today follow closely those traditions, and especially that of North America. You can’t go wrong with these lovely kits – amply sized queens at 90 inches wide finished size and between 108 and 113 inches long. 100% ecru cotton, the one above even comes with a matching backing specifically made for it.

Spartex wholecloth quilt kit - Hagerstown Feather queen in ecru

Above is Spatex Hagerstown Feather – a quilt kit derived from an antique quilt in a museum collection. Spartex quilt kits appear to be out of print – the firm, which was based in North Carolina is no longer in business, so the kits appear now and then in the secondary market only. This is a queen sized kit and is in an ecru shade.

Above is another traditional wholecloth pattern – it’s by Doublestencil and is called American Star. Measuring 90×113 this is a more than ample kit in an antique off whiute and is based on a quilt in the Smithsonian Institution collection.

I have just unfolded and photographed this lovely kit and find it smells sweet and fresh and has not a mark on it! The paper fronting the package has a good clear picture of the quilt in colour on front and the reverse of the sheet has all the instruction  and the thread requirements – this is going to be a treasure for someone! Wish I could keep it for myself, but there is already interest in it!

Progress #1553 Majestic applique quilt kit - view of fabrics for applique

 The fabrics for applique are a great mix of subtle cotton percale solids combined with small scale floral prints, and as you can see by the picture of the finished quilt on the front of the package.

 Progress #1553 Majestic is a rare take on the commoner “Tree of Life” kit, also made by Progress (#1492)  - both are based on the Palampores or block printed bedspread sized panels exported by the Dutch East India Company and the British East India Company from the Coromandel Coast of India. These  “indiennes” prints as they were called caught the fancy of late 17th century Europe due to both their novelty and the fact that they were  extremely high quality  cotton woven goods  such as  had never been seen in Europe or even imagined – they are seen today still as made in both The Netherlands by den Haan and Wagenmakers, and in Provence by Souileado and Les Olivades and many smaller  firms.

I was researching the central chintz panels that are currently available yesterday, as I have a large box of “indiennes” samples from den Haan which is calling out for me to make a medallion quilt from it. Den Haan and Wagenmakers http://www.dutchquilts.net/EN_index_.html       features a  chintz panel, and Margo Kreuger of Reproduction Fabrics  http://www.reproductionfabrics.com/   has recently launched a line of three different panels – exciting!!
