The fabrics for applique are a great mix of subtle cotton percale solids combined with small scale floral prints, and as you can see by the picture of the finished quilt on the front of the package.

Progress #1553 Majestic is a rare take on the commoner “Tree of Life” kit, also made by Progress (#1492) - both are based on the Palampores or block printed bedspread sized panels exported by the Dutch East India Company and the British East India Company from the Coromandel Coast of India. These “indiennes” prints as they were called caught the fancy of late 17th century Europe due to both their novelty and the fact that they were extremely high quality cotton woven goods such as had never been seen in Europe or even imagined – they are seen today still as made in both The Netherlands by den Haan and Wagenmakers, and in Provence by Souileado and Les Olivades and many smaller firms.

I was researching the central chintz panels that are currently available yesterday, as I have a large box of “indiennes” samples from den Haan which is calling out for me to make a medallion quilt from it. Den Haan and Wagenmakers http://www.dutchquilts.net/EN_index_.html features a chintz panel, and Margo Kreuger of Reproduction Fabrics http://www.reproductionfabrics.com/ has recently launched a line of three different panels – exciting!!

Below are pictures of two recently finished and delivered projects that I worked on over the past winter. Both are one of a kind, hand pieced and hand appliqued quilts, which were finished with careful and detailed hand quilting.

Above is a queen sized quilt inspired by a 19th century quilt in a Pennsylvania museum. You can click on the picture to enlarge it and see all the careful handquilting. The client is a woman living in the Washington DC area, who is delighted with the results, and we are already working on a follow-up commission to this one.

Above is the sixth of a series of quilts I have made for a West Coast Canadian dealer in First Nations Art. I have made two bed quilts for him, and this is the fourth version of pieces of art he has asked me to do – again he is very satisfied and I am currently working on two more commissions he has entrusted to me. These pieces are an exciting challenge and it is hoped they will be exhibited in a textile show planned for the coming winter in Victoria BC.

I have had a busy winter and as I go into my summer season at my Quilt Studio I have some exciting commissions I’m working on. Now if the weather would just improve I could do some gardening too!!

It is my version of a quilt in the collection of the State Museum of Pennsylvania and dates to the 19th century. The colours red, green and ochre are commonly used amoung the pennsylvania dutch in particular and in the northeastern United States and Canada in general.
It has been thrilling to make this quilt, and in particular so gratifying to see how easily the blocks and strips come together when hand piecing is used rather than machine piecing.
After this quilt and a couple of smaller commissions are completed, I am hoping to get several of my vintage and antique quilt tops ready for hand quilting, and also to make several other quilts using 19th centrury reproduction fabrics. Of you are interested in exploring any of these possibilities, please contact me at mailto:janet@novascotiaquilts.com
