VINTAGE PROGRESS AND PARAGON CROSS STITCH QUILT KITS
Today’s post will feature vintage cross stitch quilt kits from Paragon, with one entry from Progress. Both Paragon and Progress have a fine reputation for quality materials and good design. In some cases I also have the original thread kits from PeriLusta and these are no longer being manufactured, so rarely show up on the secondary market. In some cases where there is no thread kit I may be able to help out with supplies in the large quantities called for and at a somewhat better price than the current nearly a dollar a skein that many stores are asking.
Here we have the lovely Progress #1524 Windsor Rose in a generous 90×103 – a double/queen.

Back after a little searching is this lovely cross stitch quilt kit based on the early 19th century formalized urn with floewers. This is Paragon #01175 Country Garden in the double/queen size of 90×103. shipping = $245SD

This lovely quilt kit is rare – I had not seen this one until I saw it on the secondary market and snapped it up. This is Paragon #01169 – Iris Garden, again in a double/queen 90×103. I may have sufficient thread in the various colourways to supply you, but it will be DMC, not the vintage PeriLusta – we can discuss this.

Above is the single bed size (72×103) Paragon #01164 Remembrance. I have the brown and gold colourway thread kit, but personsally I find the red green and ochre colourway truer to the traditional 19th century quilts this kit is based on. Your choice.
PRICE: $200USD + $20USD shipping = $220, with vintage thread kit an additional $30USD*********************
Here is a lovely vintage Paragon #01193 Rosebud sized for a double – 84×102. It has been about half completed and has with it all the thread (and more!) necessary to complete it. Like all quilt kits that have ben worked on, it has a few “beauty spots” that in my experience with completing several will lighten cpnsiderably on the firsat washing once quilted and on subsequent washings fade to the poinnt of disappearing.

This is Bucilla #3128 Dogwood. This is a rare kit and seldom comes on the market.
The kit is composed of a trellis work of lovely two tone pink blossoms with green leaves and brown stems. The embroidery details suggested are very delicate and designed to enhance the effect.
The drop is to be quilted – a simple and understated treatment that gives all the drama to the top of the bed.
This kit has been started – in fact it’s close to half completed and by a sure and skilled hand. Your chance to pick up where the unknown quiltmaker left off some 50 years ago and complete a family treasure. The quilt will finish to an ample double bed size – 84×99.

News For Lovers of Vintage Quilt Kits!
So today I am giving you a little preview of the listings I’ll be posting here over the next week or two.
I want to remind you that my kits are stored in a clean dustfree and pet free environment in plastic totes. Although I cannot guarantee that the sources I acquired these kits from were tobacco smoke free, I have an extremely sensitive sniffer and there’s no trace of smoke on any of them. I am a non-smoker, my house is a smoke free zone, and I no longer share my home with any pets. So that’s about as good as it can get!
As unstarted quilt kits get harder to find, I have been considering acquiring some finished quilts that have been made from kits – above is a treasure that was made from Bucilla’s Living Rose 3285 Applique kit. It is 74×88 and I also have the kit itself – unstarted and measuring 84x 100. Pricing to come when the finished quilt and the kit are listed. If you want to discuss price or put a HOLD on any of these items shown today get in touch: janet@novascotiaquilts.com
The kit shown above – bucilla 8814 “Pansy Garden” is a double size and I had given up the idea of ever having it in stock again. The kit came in two colour choices and this one is the rose coloured choice – striking!!!
Watch this spot as I begin to list my treasures and be sure to contact me to put a hold on anything you are interested in purchasing – these kits don’t last long!
Enjoy your day – and may the luck of the Irish be with you!!!
Hugs – Janet
A Completed Quilt made from a Kit, Very Early Vintage
This Info just in: Thanks to Sharon Pinka and Merikay Waldvogel, quilt historians in the United States!! Sharon and I have remained in touch after she visited my studio here in Nova Scotia the summer before last! Thanks gals!
This lovely quilt made from a kit is “Scattered Morning Glories” made by Home Needlecraft Creations #7127 and was advertised in McCall’s Magazine during the 1940’s. This confirmed my thoughts on dating and on the fact that this was an early kit from one of the smaller players. It is sized at 78×97 so will fit a double bed or go sideways on a queen or king. It is more than likely unwashed and is in immaculate condition(there is one tiny stain on the backing, I have a picture of it and can send it to you…..).
PRICE: $650 USD + $35 shipping and insurance = $685
Today I’m announcing a departure from my usual inventory of vintage quilting kits, both applique and cross stitch. I’m certain there is a market for carefully curated kit quilts that are completely finished and in pristine or near pristine condition. This one shown below fills the bill on all those counts and as well, I believe it dates very early on in the manufacture of these kits.
Judging by the luscious strong solid pastels used to make up this kit, it likely dates to the 1930’s or early 1940’s. I have several colleagues among the Quilt Study and Quilt Dating groups, and one of these knowledgeable people is showing it to her contacts to gather some information for me.
As you can see, there is a lovely scalloped border completely around the outside of the quilt and the quilt measures 79×97. 100% cotton, of course, inside and out.
Until the quilt gets to me and I can do further research and examine it carefully I am hesitant to put a price on it, but I do want to give everyone a heads up as it will be first come, first served with this charmer.
The only blemish on the entire quilt, so I am told, is a small dark amber coloured stain on the back – perhaps the size of a pencil end. But until I have the quilt in my hands I hesitate to say there is no other blemish.
The quilt is still bearing the stamped on quilting guidelines and one tiny print indicator saying “seam” so we are sure that this is from a kit, and also that it has been neither used nor washed.
I will add further info as I get it…..Contact me – mailto:janet@novascotiaquilts.com for further discussion or to put a hold on it.
